A Very Warm Welcome
Thank’s for dropping by at the remodeled 1-800-solve site! I know I’m guilty of having suspended posting to the site for … uhum … a few weeks, but you all know how life goes. And some projects simply take their time.
Currently, things may be a little bit rough around the edges but should smoothen out soon. So, if you experience any errors, please bear with me for a while. I also hope to have the archived content up again in a few weeks. Until then, it’s mostly new stuff only.
Although the original idea of mocking the software industry business while interspersing one or two gems of wisdom worked well for more than two years, I finally hit a dead end. But after years of silence, I hope to be able to revive the site, albeit now focusing on my interests. In other words: I got my own blog at a time when most bloggers have already abandoned theirs and corybanticly started twittering. — What a relief!
- Berlin Alexanderplatz — 17 Oct 2009
- Last week I was on a business trip in Berlin, Germany. It was my first trip to the German capital which prepares for the twentieth anniversary celebrations of the tear-down of the Berlin Wall. (It was on November 9, 1989, that the regime of the then German Democratic Republic ordered to open the borders and allowed its citizens to travel to Western countries.)
- Help Saving the Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna — 20 Sep 2009
- In an short-sighted decision to minimize the company’s losses of EUR 60 million for the fiscal year 2009, the executive board of the Österreichischer Rundfunk wants to get rid of its symphony orchestra. Please join the friends of the RSO Wien in their fight to preserve the musical variety to which this orchestra contributes so much.
- Georg Ferdinand Waldmüller — 12 Sep 2009
- Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller (1793–1865) was an Austrian artist who specialized himself in painting portraits and landscapes. In his works, Waldmüller liked to decpict the rural life with astounding detail. Unfortunately, until today many people fail to recognize Waldmüller’s intentions: Thus, he often is only perceived as a Biedemeier artist, while the social tragedies in his paintings — plain to see for everybody who tries — might be overlooked.

- A Self-Portrait a Day for a Year — Wed, Sep 30, 2009
- Val, a 27 year old from Michigan, blogs on Flickr about her teaching assignment in Mountain Village, AK. She has set up now the second set with daily pics and short comments which very well illustrate her coping with nature’s forces. On her accompanying blog “Into the Wild”, she publishes very interesting texts about her adventures up north. Worth the read!
- Design at Facebook — Fri, Sep 25, 2009
- Luke Wroblewski has written an interesting entry about how Facebook designs its site and user experience. What becomes evident from the first sentence is that in order to succeed in today’s online business industry, you as an employee have to bring more than only one skill to the table. I just love the following quote:
- I wish we did mockups. This is just so different from most companies I know (via Daring Fireball).
Get your hands dirty. Important that you understand how Web code works. All designers write a bit of HTML, CSS, and maybe PHP. […]
Mockups lie. They lack content and context. Need to use real content and page designs to understand how the design will work.

- This one nearly sent me on the floor laughing. You won’t miss the guy’s comments on her emails (via Ask Alexis).
